CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Rachel Root won two individual events but the Illinois State swimming and diving team came up short in a double dual against Southern Illinois and host Illinois Saturday, falling to the Illini, 200-81, and the Salukis, 171-110. Illinois also beat the Salukis, 178-103, in the double dual format. Â
Root finished first in the 100- (57.80) and 200-yard backstroke (2:04.00) to capture Illinois State's only first-place finishes.
Karley Licking followed right behind Root, earning second in the 100-yard backstroke (59.77). Jensen Keck came in third in both the 100- (1:06.33) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.69). Kristin Verkler finished third in the 100-yard freestyle (53.40). Maia Cain claimed third place in the 200-yard butterfly (2:09.91). Savannah Rubocki earned a third-place finish in the 400-yard IM (4:38.33). The team of Rachel Holm, Keck, Root, and Mary Katherine Tillotson came in second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.71).
"It was great to see some great races going on from all three teams," ISU head swimming coach Scott Cameron said. "We still have a lot of things to work on, and this meet will help us focus on those details as we get closer to our midseason meet next month. Overall, I was very pleased with our effort at this meet."
Kelsey Toland earned third place in the 1-meter diving event, scoring a total of 196.65 points. Toland also led Illinois State in the 3-meter diving event (182.95), coming in sixth.
"We put forth a great team effort today," head diving coach Phil Hoffmann said. "It really set us up well to see what we need to work on moving forward to the midseason meets coming up."
The Redbirds will return to the pool next Friday as they travel to Terre Haute, Indiana, to take on Indiana State Oct. 28 at 6 p.m.
