Women’s Tennis Gears up for Trio of Matches

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's tennis team (7-3) will travel to the East Coast for three spring break matches against Charleston Southern, Savannah State, and the College of Charleston, March 7-10.

The Redbirds begin their spring break road trip Monday (March 7) in Charleston, South Carolina, with a match against Charleston Southern at 1 p.m. CT. Tuesday (March 8), the team will travel to Savannah, Georgia, to take on Savannah State at 12 p.m. CT. To round out the trip, ISU will travel to Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, Thursday (March 10) where the team will battle the College of Charleston at 2:30 p.m. CT.  

Saturday, ISU faced its first ranked opponent of the season, No. 53 DePaul. Despite a hard-fought battle, the Redbirds came up short, falling to DePaul, 7-0. Coming away with the lone doubles win, Redbird twosome Veronika Golanova and Jana Kustkova fought point-for-point in No. 2 doubles against DePaul's Patricia Lancranjan and Marina Cozac. Golanova and Kustkova came out on top winning, 7-5.

Charleston Southern is an undefeated 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big South Conference. The Buccaneers have earned wins over South Carolina State, Kennesaw State, Longwood and Radford.  In its last time out, Charleston Southern swept Big South Conference foe Longwood, 7-0.  

Savannah State is 0-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and 0-10 overall. In its last match, Savannah State was defeated by Wofford College, 0-7. Before Savannah State squares off against ISU, it will first face George Mason University, Monday.   

The College of Charleston began its season at 6-3 overall and is 1-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association. In the College of Charleston's last matchup, they topped conference opponent, Hofstra, 5-2. The Cougars will be busy the days leading up to facing the Redbirds. The College of Charleston will first face Rutgers, USC Upstate and Michigan State.

Monday's match against Charleston Southern will be held at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex in Charleston, South Carolina, at 1 p.m. CT. Tuesday's contest versus Savannah State will take place at the Tiger Tennis Courts in Savannah, Georgia. Match play is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT. The Redbirds' final spring break match will take place at the College of Charleston at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina at 2:30 CT.
