Wallace Still at 1-Over after 36 Holes at NCAA Championship

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – Illinois State men's golf standout Trent Wallace shot an even-par 72 (38-34) in Saturday's second round of the NCAA Division I Championship at the par-72, 7,735-yard Rich Harvest Farms. He currently sits in a tie for 62nd place in the field of 156 student-athletes with a 1-over-par 145 (73-72).

Wallace started his round on the back nine and caught fire immediately. He birdied the first three holes and climbed to 2-under-par. After bogeying two of the next three holes, Wallace finished the back strong with two pars and a birdie, which came on the par-4 17th, to fire a 2-under-par 34 over the first nine holes of the day.

The sophomore from Joliet, Illinois, started the front nine with a par and moved back to 2-under when he birdied the par-5 second. Wallace then collected a par on the par-3 third, but he gave a stroke back when he bogeyed the par-4 fourth. After back-to-back pars, Wallace double bogeyed the par-5 16th, before bouncing back with back-to-back pars to finish the front with a 2-over-par 38 and the round with an even-par 72.

"Trent (Wallace) played beautifully today, but just didn't get much out of his round," head coach Ray Kralis said. "A couple swings proved costly, but he hit so many great shots from which he can build on going into tomorrow. He is within a couple shots of the cut number, so it is well within his reach."

Scottie Scheffler of Texas leads the field with an 8-under-par 136 (68-68), one stroke ahead of four student-athletes tied for second place. Overall, 49 participants are under par. UNLV leads the 30-team field with a 14-under-par 562 (283-279), one stroke ahead of Oklahoma and three strokes ahead of third-place Illinois.

Wallace is slated to tee off in Sunday's third round at 1:57 p.m. In order to make the cut to Monday's final round, he must have one of the nine lowest scores not on one of the 15 advancing teams.
