NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State soccer team topped the Milwaukee Panthers, 2-1, in a preseason match Saturday night at Adelaide Street Field. The Redbirds tied the Panthers, 1-1, in last season's preseason match up.
Junior Kiley Czerwinski and senior Hannah Rodgers each tallied a goal in the win. Czerwinski capitalized on a through ball from senior Kelli Zickert to cross the keeper and hit the top right corner of the net in the middle of the first half to give the Redbirds a 1-0 advantage. Rodgers extended the lead, 2-0, off a penalty kick after a foul inside the 18 in the second half. Milwaukee answered with a goal of their later in the second half but were unable to come up with the equalizer.
Illinois State tallied eight shots, four on goal, while Milwaukee finished with 11, five on goal. Each team tallied four corner kicks throughout the match.
The Redbirds kick off the regular season Friday, Aug. 18 when they travel to Ypsilanti, Michigan to face Eastern Michigan. On Sunday, Aug. 20, Illinois State will play their home opener against Northwestern at 1 p.m.
