NORMAL, Ill. – After a four match home stand, ISU heads for Greencastle, IN. and Dayton, Ohio, to take on DePauw University, Wright State and Dayton this weekend.
Leading the way for the Redbirds, Veronika Golanova was named MVC singles tennis player of the week after an outstanding performance this past weekend. She captured two victories at one singles from her University of Missouri – St. Louis (6-2, 6-2) and Western Illinois (6-2, 6-3) opponents. She sits 4-2 in the one singles spot so far this dual season, after claiming a second-place title at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships this fall.
Illinois State heads to Greencastle, Ind. for their first away match up of the weekend, against DePauw University on Friday Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. The next day the team departs for Dayton, Ohio. where they will face off against Wright State at 3:30 p.m. The final matchup of the weekend will be held on Sunday Feb. 25, in Dayton, Ohio against Dayton at 11 a.m.
ISU sits at 6-1 so far in this 2018 dual season and have defeated: Eastern, Chicago State, Iowa State, Northern, Missouri – St. Louis and Western. Newcomer Laura Fitzgerald currently holds the best singles record for the Redbirds in the six singles position, sitting at 6-1. Golanova and Ivon Mihaleva lead behind Fitzgerald, both having a record of 4-2.
The must watch doubles team for Illinois State continues to be the tandem of Golanova and Jelena Karla Vujicic at one doubles. The duo currently sits at 5-1 so far this dual season, with two doubles, Jana Kustkova and Mihaleva behind them holding a record of 4-2.
The Redbirds return to Normal, Ill. after a long weekend of away matches, to turn around the following weekend and head for Lincoln, Neb. There the team will take on UMKC and Nebraska.
