COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Redbird men's track and field team completed the 2018 indoor campaign Friday at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Texas A&M, in College Station, Texas. Jaylan McConico, Kentre Patterson, and Derrius Rodgers all earned Second-Team All-American honors.
"We are extremely proud of our student-athletes and the season that they had," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Jeff Bovee. "To compete on this stage as underclassmen is a true accomplishment, and they are helping to put Illinois State on the map. We leave this meet hungry to get back to the NCAA Championships."
McConico, who competed in the 60-meter hurdles prelims, posted the highest finish of the Redbird trio. The MVC's Most Outstanding Track Athlete ran a time of 7.84 to finish 11th and receive All-American accolades for the first time of his career.
Patterson, who also competed in the 60-meter hurdles prelims, finished 15th with a time of 7.99. In just his first season with the Redbird Track & Field program, he walks away with All-American honors as well.
Rodgers, the 2018 MVC 60-meter champion, placed 14th in the 60-meter prelims with a time of 6.80. He is now a two-time Indoor Second-Team All-American after receiving this distinction following the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships as well.
This marks the second-straight year that the Redbirds have had a student-athlete earn Indoor Second-Team All-American honors.
The Illinois State men's and women's track and field teams will open the 2018 outdoor season on March 23-24, 2018, when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., to compete in the Vanderbilt Invitational.
