NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State men's tennis head coach Mark Klysner announced the addition of Diego Herrera to the 2018-19 season.
A Portugal native, Herrera has been training in Barcelona for the past seven years and will begin his ISU career in the fall of 2018 as a freshman.
Herrera on Choosing Illinois State: "I chose ISU because it is somewhere I can compete at a high level and where I can initiate my studies in the business field. Another reason I chose ISU is because of the good relationship I have with Coach Klysner that showed me a lot of enthusiasm regarding the tennis team. I am really excited to start participating in tennis tournaments and in matches representing and defending the colors of ISU."
Klysner on Herrera: "I am excited to announce the addition of another talented player from overseas. He has shown a lot of improvement in his game in a short time. I am excited to add a lefty to the roster as it's been a while since I have had one play for me. I was impressed with his eagerness to get here and start working hard for us this fall and after speaking more with him and his family, he just seemed to fit in with the group of guys we already have here. I think Diego's best tennis is certainly ahead of him and we look forward to having him here in the fall."
Herrera was also being recruited by Middle Tennessee State, Quinnipiac, Delaware and James Madison.
The Redbirds will finish out the dual season with the Summit League Championships April 27 through April 29 in Denver, Colorado.
