SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A split squad contingent from Illinois State took fifth place Saturday at the Missouri State Invitational. Only the Redbirds not competing at Friday's Dennis Stark Relays at Notre Dame made the trip to Springfield, Missouri, on Saturday.
The Redbirds scored a total of 243 points in the meet, while Little Rock took sixth (217) and Northern Iowa seventh (206). Houston and Missouri State tied for first place, each with a total score of 347 points. Rice followed with a score of 326, then Southern Illinois, with a tally of 289 points.
Rachel Root posted Illinois State's top finishes, taking second in the 100-yard backstroke (56.24) and fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.97). Rachel Holm placed fifth in both the 100-yard (1:05.23) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.87). Mary Katherine Tillotson finished in fifth place in the 100-yard (52.69) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.69).
The relay team of Holm, Laura Paskoff, Root and Kristin Verkler came in fifth place in the 400-yard medley relay (3:50.99). Jensen Keck, Root, Tillotson and Verkler also took fifth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.28).
"I'm very happy with how the team performed," said head swimming coach Scott Cameron. "It was great to see them put up a lot off fast times this early in the season, and gives us a good indication of what we are capable of later on this season."
The Redbirds will return to action in a double dual meet against Illinois and Southern Illinois in Champaign, Illinois on Oct. 22 at 12 p.m.
