NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Illinois State men's golf team is tied for second place after the first round of play Sunday at Notre Dame's Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic at the par-70, 6,810-yard Warren Golf Course in Notre Dame, Indiana. The Redbirds finished the round with a 2-over-par 282 and have three golfers currently in the top-15 on the individual leaderboard, including sophomore Trent Wallace, senior Christian Crabill, and freshman David Perkins.
Eastern Michigan leads the fifteen-team field, after finishing the round two strokes ahead of ISU with an even-par 280 and Texas El Paso is tied with the Redbirds with a 2-over-par 282.
Wallace led the Redbirds in scoring, firing a 2-under-par 68 (35-33) and is currently tied for third place on the individual leaderboard. Wallace also added four total birdies, including two on holes 17 and 18.
Crabill had another strong performance, carding a 1-under-par 69 (32-37) and sits right behind Wallace on the individual leaderboard in a tie for fifth place. Crabill also tallied four birdies on the day, including three on the front nine.
Perkins totaled an impressive 1-over-par 71 (37-34) and is tied for 15th place on the individual leaderboard. His performance also included two birdies on the back nine.
Junior Zach Burry added to the Redbirds scoring, shooting a 4-over-par 74 (39-35) and also added two birdies. Senior Austin Havens concluded the round with a 6-over-par 76 (38-38) and freshman Jason Marrs, who competed as an individual, tallied a 7-over-par 77 (38-39).
"The golf course is a great test, as it is demanding on, around, and into the greens. It obviously held its own with no teams under par after day one," head coach Ray Kralis said. I am pleased with our start and think we had a solid team effort with Trent (Wallace), Christian (Crabill), and Dave (Perkins) leading the way at the top of the leaderboard. We need to stay focused in the present, as there is a long way to go in the tournament, but I think we've put ourselves in a position to make a move tomorrow and set ourselves up for the final round on Tuesday."
The Redbirds will resume play Monday in the second round of Notre Dame's Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic, at the Warren Golf Course in Notre Dame, Indiana. The round will begin at 8:30 a.m. on holes one and 10.
