LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Rachel Root set another Illinois State record Saturday, breaking her record time from last night in the 100-yard backstroke (55.12), as the Redbird swimming and diving team finished the second day of the Louisville Invite in fifth place.
Host Louisville remained in first place at the conclusion of day two with 1,537 points. Florida International ended the day in second (1,067), followed by Ohio (697) and Southern Illinois (640).
The Redbirds placed fifth in both relay swims Saturday night. Maia Cain, Rachel Holm, Root and Kristin Verkler made up the 200-yard medley relay team (1:45.53). Laura Paskoff, Grace Soltys, Mary Katherine Tillotson and Verkler formed the 800-yard freestyle relay team (7:40.80).
Jensen Keck led the Redbirds in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in fourth place (1:03.35). Holm followed, touching the wall for sixth (1:03.74). Cain took 10th in the 100-yard butterfly (56.70), while Savannah Rubocki earned 10th in the 400-yard IM (4:29.22).
"Another very strong day for us in the pool," ISU head swimming coach Scott Cameron said. "We continue to post multiple season- and lifetime-bests in every event, and they continue to build off the momentum of each other's swims. Overall, very happy with today and excited for tomorrow's final sessions."
Kristen Larson led the Redbird diving team, placing 14th in the 1-meter preliminaries (175.05). She was followed by Rachel Stein, who took 15th (173.85). Emma Butts finished Saturday's 1-meter event in 17th place (143.40).
"Today was a very good day for the divers and a great way to end the weekend," head diving coach Phil Hoffmann said. "We had some solid performances and even a few lifetime bests. I am proud of how the divers competed for Illinois State this weekend."
The Louisville invite will conclude on Sunday.
