CARBONDALE, Ill. – Nine members of the Illinois State men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up their season-opener at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic in Carbondale, Illinois.
Junior Morgan Keller posted a first-place victory in the women's discus throw with a mark of 47.87m (157-00), while Kassie Hoyme captured a mark of 33.82m (110-11).
Keller went on to place fourth in the women's shot put with a throw of 14.72m (48-03.50), while Brandy Thomas finished sixth with a mark of 13.80m (45-03.50). Also in the women's shot put, Hoyme placed 12th with a mark of 11.13m (36-06.25).
Thomas also competed in the women's hammer throw and threw a mark of 44.40m (145-08), which placed tenth out of a field of 20 athletes.
Tessa Holland placed eighth in the women's javelin with a mark of 26.75m (87-09) in her final attempted after fouling her first two. Jorjiann Sparrgrove posted a mark of 20.23m (66-04) in the women's javelin.
On the men's side, James Brandenburg posted a fourth-place finish in javelin with a mark of 44.31m (145-04). He also placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.13. Brandenburg competed in the 400-meter dash and posted a time of 51.31.
In men's shot put, Jake Glass placed fifth with a mark of 15.43m (50-07.50). Adam Schaufelberger shot a mark of 14.23m (46-08.25), which earned him 11th place.
Zachary Gregory placed eighth in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 46.85m (153-08), while Glass posted a mark of 43.29m (142-00.50).
"This meet was a great opportunity for our young athletes," assistant coach LaMar Garrett said. "For many this was the first time competing in events at this level. If you look at the Redbirds that competed in this meet all but one were freshman. I think it was a great meet to get them experience, especially against conference competition."
The Redbirds are back in action on March 31st as they travel to Charleston, Illinois to compete in the EIU Big Blue Classic.
