SAVANNAH, Ga.  – The Illinois State women's tennis team swept Savannah State, 7-0, to pick up its eighth win of the season Tuesday afternoon at the Tiger Tennis Courts.
ISU jumped out to an early lead after sweeping doubles play to win the doubles point. The undefeated Redbird duo of Marcia Tere-Apisah and Veronika Golanova earned their fifth No. 1 doubles victory when they took down Savannah State's Elizabeth Geronimo and Rachida Kateb, 6-3. Freshman Jana Kustkova and senior Sarah Paulson picked up their second victory as a doubles team, by defeating Jennyfer Vivas and Bria Burrow of Savannah State, 6-2. Due to Savannah State not having enough players to field a No. 3 doubles team, the ISU twosome of Catherine Shulman and Chanel Scudiero won by default.
The Redbirds continued their hot streak right into singles play where all six Redbirds earned a singles victory over Savannah State. Not wasting any time, Shulman swept Tiffany Williams in No. 5Â singles, in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. In No. 3 singles, Valerija Gercar earned a win over Burrow, outscoring Burrow, 6-1, 6-0. Meanwhile in No. 1 singles, Golanova claimed her seventh singles victory of the season against Geronimo, beating Geronimo in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Likewise in No. 2 singles, Kustkova tallied her seventh singles win after defeating Kateb, 6-3, 6-2. Scudiero topped Vivas, 6-2, 7-6(4) in No. 4 singles, and Paulson won by default in No. 6 singles.
Next up, the Redbirds will wrap-up their spring break trip Thursday (March 10) against the College of Charleston. The match will get underway at 2:30 p.m. CT at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.
