WICHITA, Kan. – Illinois State senior catcher Jean Ramirez has been named to the watch list for the Johnny Bench Award, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced Wednesday.
The 2016 Johnny Bench Award, presented by BaseballSavings.com, will be awarded to the top Division I catcher on June 30.
Ramirez is one of 74 players nominated by their coaches for the award. The nominees will be pared down to a semifinalist group on May 18, and ballots will be sent to a national voting panel in late May to determine three finalists for the award. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 19th annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 30.
Ramirez, a senior from Fort Worth, Texas, is currently batting .205 with two doubles, six RBIs and four runs scored through 11 games to start the season. Behind the plate, he has not committed an error.
In 2014, Ramirez hit .257 with four home runs and 22 RBIs in 39 games.
