NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State baseball team will play a pair of midweek games, first traveling to SIUE Tuesday before returning to Bloomington-Normal for the 10th annual Horenberger-Bass Classic at Illinois Wesleyan's Jack Horenberger Field Wednesday. Both games are set for 6 p.m. starts.
Illinois State (9-25, 1-4 MVC) returns to action after going 1-2 in a weekend Missouri Valley Conference series at Indiana State. The Redbirds won the series opener, 5-1, but suffered losses in the second and third games, by scores of 6-5 and 3-2, respectively.
SIUE (7-25) will host the Redbirds Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Roy E. Lee Field in Edwardsville. The Cougars won one of three games over the weekend in a series at Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Kentucky.
Illinois State will go with right-hander Jeffrey Barton (0-1, 7.78 ERA) against SIUE, while the hosts will start left-hander Michael Shereyk (0-0, 7.47).
Wednesday's game against Illinois Wesleyan will mark the 157th all-time meeting of the two programs. Illinois State owns an 86-70 edge in the all-time series, which is named in honor of legendary coaches Duffy Bass (Illinois State) and Horenberger (Illinois Wesleyan).
Illinois Wesleyan (16-12) was swept in a doubleheader at North Central Saturday, but beat North Central Sunday at Jack Horenberger Field.
Starting pitchers for Wednesday's games have not yet been announced, as both teams are in action Tuesday night.
