ST. LOUIS – Illinois State's Jacob Hendren has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Tuesday. Hendren and the female winner, Drake's Emma Huston, were honored for their performances during the week of April 18-24.
Hendren turned in his best performance of the 2016 season as he tossed seven shutout innings in an eventual 1-0 win over Southern Illinois Sunday afternoon at Duffy Bass Field.
Hendren allowed just three hits and three walks, while striking out three, in the Missouri Valley Conference win. The senior left-hander was efficient, getting through seven innings with just 92 pitches, before giving way to a pair of Redbird relievers, who finished off the shutout win.
A standout in the classroom as well, Hendren boasts a 3.89 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) as a mathematics/pre-medicine major.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, must have completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
