Current and Future Redbirds Set to Compete at the USATF Junior Championships

NORMAL, Ill. – A total of five current and future student-athletes will compete at the USA Track & Field 2016 Junior Championships in Clovis, California on June 24-26.

Athletes have a chance to earn a spot on the junior Team USA, who will then compete at IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland from July 19-24. The national junior team has a maximum of two entries per event.

Illinois State has a group of four current student-athletes have will be competing for a spot, and they are Tessa Holland (heptathlon), Brandy Thomas (shot put), Shandall Thomas (100m) and Ashleigh Wilson (400m). There will also be one future Redbird compete in the high jump which is Anthony McRoberts.

Holland notched her spot to the junior championships at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships where she posted a total score of 4,819 in the heptathlon. Her score is ranked eighth on the all-time best list. Holland is the only Missouri Valley Conference student-athlete that will be represented in the heptathlon, and she will be competing against 14 other athletes.

Brandy will be competing in the women's shot put along with 16 other student-athletes. Brandy's personal-best shot put mark is a toss of 48-11.75 (14.93m).

On the track, Shandall will be looking for a spot on the national junior team as he competes in the 100-meter dash. His personal-best time is 10.54, which was captured at the MVC Championships. For the women, Wilson will compete in the 400-meter dash with a field of 32 student-athletes. She posted her personal-best time at the MVC Championships at a time of 55.10, which is ranked eighth on ISU's all-time best list.

McRoberts will be joining the Redbirds for the 2016-17 season, as he will be a part of the 2016-17 class. At the junior championships, McRoberts will compete in the high jump with 16 other student-athletes. He cleared a height at 6-11.00, which is his personal-best mark.
