NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State women's basketball sophomore Millie Stevens had the opportunity to play for Great Britain in last month's 13-team International Basketball Federation (FIBA) U20 Women's European Championship (Division B), which took place July 9-17 in Podgorica, Montenegro. She helped her country to a 3-3 record and a fifth-place finish, as Great Britain defeated Montenegro, 63-46, in the fifth-place game to avenge an earlier loss in the tournament to the host country.
Stevens, who hails from Surrey, England, played in all six contests, averaging 2.7 points and 2.7 rebounds per game while averaging 10.6 minutes per game. She saved her best for last in the fifth-place game, producing tournament highs in points (8), rebounds (6), steals (1), made field goals (3) and minutes played (22).
"The experience was a great opportunity to grow as a player in a different environment to the one that I am faced with at ISU," Stevens said. "It allowed me to build upon my skill set that my coaches at school have helped me with the past year, and it also allowed me to put these skills into practice during the 10 games we played over the three-week time period. I really loved every minute of it, and it was an honor to be able to represent my country. I hope that it is an opportunity I will be blessed with again."
"I'm very happy for Millie to have the opportunity to play for her National Team," head coach Barb Smith said. "This has already been a tremendous experience for her. I'm proud of her and all the work she has put in this spring to become a better player."
