ST. LOUIS – Illinois State men's golfer David Perkins was selected at the Missouri Valley Conference Tri-Men's Golfer of the Week, it was announced Thursday by the league. Perkins shares the honors with Southern Illinois' Brandon Carlson and Matt Greenfield.
The freshman from East Peoria, Illinois, fired a 4-under-par 68 in Tuesday's final round of Wisconsin's Badger Invitational to lead the Redbirds, who finished in a three-way tie for fourth place with a 6-over-par 870 (286-296-288) at the par-72 University Ridge Golf Course. Perkins, who was competing in his first-ever collegiate event, finished the tournament in a tie for fifth place on the individual leaderboard with a 5-under-par 211 (71-72-68). His final round consisted of five birdies, as he shot a 1-under-par 35 on the front and a 3-under-par 33 on the back.
Overall, Perkins tallied 11 birdies, with three coming in the first round, and three more coming in a second round with winds that were consistently around 15 miles per hour and gusts into the 20's coupled with even faster greens. He was just three strokes off the winning score and one stoke out of third. The field included Iowa State and Kansas State from the Big 12; Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Rutgers from the Big Ten; and two Big East teams: Marquette and Butler. Overall, 13 teams and 81 student-athletes competed in the event.
