NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State swimming and diving team came out on top in a double dual against Illinois Wesleyan and Lewis University Friday at Horton Pool, beating the Titans, 197-91, and the Flyers, 184-92.
Maia Cain, Rachel Holm, Rachel Root, Savannah Rubocki and Mary Katherine Tillotson all won two events apiece, respectively, for the Redbirds. Cain, Holm, Root and Tillotson also clocked the top time in the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.67).
Cain won both the 50-yard (27.02) and 100-yard butterfly (59.21), while Holm swept the 50-yard (30.72) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.60). Root was best in the 50-yard (26.64) and 100-yard backstroke events (57.41). Rubocki touched first in the 500-yard (5:13.02) and 1,000-yard freestyle (10:44.60), and Tillotson was tops in the 50-yard (24.76) and 200-yard freestyle (1:55.59).
Illinois State head swimming coach Scott Cameron was happy with his team's performance in the meet.
"I was very pleased with the meet and how the girls performed," said Cameron. "They started very strong and put together a lot of great swims throughout the night. This will be a great building block for the rest of the season."
Kelsey Toland took first in 1-meter diving (231.22), while her Redbird teammate Kristen Larson won the 3-meter event (233.25).
Head diving coach Phil Hoffmann was pleased with his divers' performances. Â Â
"I was really happy with the way the girls performed. Both Kelsey and Kristen had fantastic events. I was very happy with how Rachel (Stein) and Emma (Butts) dove as well. This was their first full 3-meter meet," said Hoffmann. "It was a great opportunity for them to dive at home in a college meet environment. It helps give us some things to work on moving forward, but all four of them dove very well. "
The Redbirds will split up next weekend, with some members of the team traveling to the Dennis Stark Relays at Notre Dame Friday, Oct. 7, while others will head to the Missouri State Invite on Saturday, Oct. 8.
