NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men's basketball team welcomes Indiana State to Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. with several promotions.
The men's basketball coaching staff will be participating in Suits And Sneakers Awareness Week – a Coaches vs. Cancer initiative that partners with the American Cancer Society and the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC). This initiative leverages the personal experiences, community leadership and professional excellence of coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness, promote healthy living and rally support.
This year, the coaching staff will be wearing white Nike sneakers, designed and painted by local cancer survivors. Among these are four prominent local artists: Harold Gregor, Doug Johnson, Ken Holder and Richard Finch. The shoes will be later auctioned off by Redbird Athletics health care partner, Advocate Bromenn Medical Center, with proceeds benefitting the Community Cancer Center in Normal. Fans can learn more about the auction by following @AdvocateBroMenn on Instagram, or by clicking here. For more information on Coaches vs. Cancer click here.
Additionally, Wednesday is AFNI Honor Roll Night. Student Athletes who earned a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or better during the spring 2016 or fall 2016 semester will be honored. This fall, 84 student-athletes achieved a 4.0 GPA and in the spring a record 89 achieved the perfect GPA mark. In all, over 300 individual student-athletes will be recognized in a halftime ceremony.
On the Redbird Arena concourse before and during the game, student athletes from the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) will be promoting the "Be The Match" initiative from the National Bone Marrow Registry. All individuals ages 18-44 can join the registry for free at the men's basketball game by visiting the table hosted by SAAC. This year, the Missouri Valley Conference SAAC is supporting this philanthropy. Every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and 70 percent of those individuals do not have a matching bone marrow donor in their family. Lastly, the Redbird Family Night ticket package is available for Wednesday's game and includes four upper bowl tickets and four hot dog meal vouchers for $40. Additional tickets and meal vouchers can be purchased for $10 each. The voucher includes a hot dog, chips and a small drink.
