ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Illinois State's Andreas Boers earned a spot in the quarterfinal round of the qualifying draw at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on day two of the tournament in Ann Arbor, Michigan
"I could not be more proud of Andreas who, much like yesterday played composed, but high energy tennis and beat a guy who was #1491 ATP," head coach Mark Klysner said. "We will try to keep things rolling tomorrow when Igor and Andreas both continue in the singles draw."
Boers defeated Marquette's Luis Heredia Gomez, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinal round of singles. Boers won three matches this tournament, improving his season record to 4-4. Boers came up short to Michigan's Carter Lin, 6-1, 6-1, in the main draw. Igor Kolaric fell by Wisconsin's Josef Dodridge, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2, in a three-set match.Â
"With this tournament, there's always focus on a heavy amount of singles play. It can be tough to get in that doubles mindset, which showed today," Klysner said. "We had some positive moments but for the most part we were just not aggressive enough or didn't command the net as much as I would have liked, but we will work on those things."
The Redbirds came up short in doubles play on day two of the tournament. Boers and Egehan Sertkaya fell by Ohio State's Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert, 8-3. Similarly, Christoffer Greve and Kolaric were defeated by Western Michigan's Eric Olivarez and Nick Schnobel, 8-2.
Illinois State will be back in action Nov. 4 through Nov. 5 at the Redbird Invitational in Normal, Illinois.Â
