NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State volleyball team's season will continue as the Redbirds earned an automatic berth in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC), tournament organizers announced Sunday night.
Illinois State will play IUPUI (16-14) on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The winner of Illinois State-IUPUI will advance to face Bowling Green (17-11) and host Green Bay (15-15).
"I am so proud of this team. A 21-win season, beating three top 100 teams and knocking off a Top 25 team is a great resume," said Illinois State head coach Leah Johnson. "This team earned the opportunity to continue its season and we want to leave our mark on the inaugural NIVC Tournament."
Illinois State (21-12) earned the Missouri Valley Conference's automatic bid to the NIVC as the league's top team not earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament. MVC regular-season and tournament champion Missouri State earned the conference's automatic bid, while Northern Iowa was an at-large selection for the NCAA Tournament.
