GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Illinois State senior right-hander Jack Landwehr has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) 2017 Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List.
Sixty players are included on the watch list for the award, which honors the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball.
Landwehr went 4-3 with a team-leading 2.89 ERA and a team-high five saves a season ago. He struck out 33 batters in 37.1 innings of work, while matching Illinois State's single-season appearances record by pitching in 32 games.
Landwehr, however, is slated to move into a starting role in 2017. He will serve as Illinois State's starting pitcher when the Redbirds open the season Friday at the Riverview Inn Governors Challenge in Clarksville, Tennessee. Illinois State will then take on host Austin Peay on Saturday and Youngstown State on Sunday. All three games are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. CT starts.
