FARMERS BRANCH, Texas – Freshman Paige Seiser shot a 10-over-par 152 (75-77) Monday to lead the Illinois State women's golf team over the first two rounds of the Bradley Spring Break Invitational at the par-71, 5,921-yard Brookhaven Country Club in the northwest Dallas suburbs.
Seiser collected one birdie in the first round, before picking up three more birdies in the second round, with all three coming on the back nine. She sits in a tie for eighth place on the individual leaderboard.
As a team, the Redbirds were in a third-place tie in the 10-team field, after shooting a 308 in the opening round. But over the second 18 holes, Illinois State shot a 317 and dropped to sixth place with a 625 (308-317). Northern Illinois is the current leader with a 597 (294-303), 12 strokes ahead of second-place Bradley and 13 strokes ahead of third-place Wichita State.
The Redbirds produced the second-lowest score on the par-3s, shooting 8-over-par, and tied for first on the par-4s, shooting 17-over. However, Illinois State struggled on the par-5s, finishing at 8-over-par. The Redbirds did tie for the most birdies on the day with eight.
Sophomore Caitlin Sims shot a 153 (77-76), which puts her in a tie for 14th place. All three of her birdies came in the second round, with a pair coming on the back nine. Junior Abby Luchtenburg cracked the top-20 with a 157 (77-80) and had two birdies on the day - both coming on the front nine during first-round play.
Junior Kiley Walsh produced three birdies over the first two rounds, with a pair occurring on the first two holes of the back nine during the first 18. She finished the day with a 163 (79-84). Senior Renee Solberg shot a 167 (80-87), but her score did not count towards the team's total in both rounds. She did finish with four birdies, with three coming in the opening round.
Senior Maggie Ambrose, who is one of two individuals competing for Illinois State, shot a 158 (80-78) and tallied four birdies - two each round and all on the back nine. Freshman Morgan Savage shot a 173 (85-88) and picked up one birdie in each round.
The Redbirds will conclude the tournament Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. to begin the third and final round.
