NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's golf team will be competing in its second tournament of the spring season beginning Friday at Florida State's Seminole Intercollegiate, which runs March 10-12 at the par-72, 7,172-yard Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Florida.
The tournament features a 54-hole stroke-play format, with 18 holes being played each day. Play starts Friday and Saturday at 8:30 a.m., with threesomes teeing off on holes one and 10. Sunday's final round begins with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring will be available throughout the tournament at GolfStat.com.
Fourteen teams will be competing in the tournament, including three teams ranked in the GolfStat Top 50 (Georgia Tech - 24th, Florida State - 31st, Jacksonville - 32nd). Also joining the field is George Mason, James Madison, Penn State, Southern Illinois, Troy, VCU, West Virginia, Western Carolina, Western Kentucky and Winthrop.
Teams are constructed with five student-athletes, and only the top-four scores count towards the school's overall total in each round. The Redbirds finished in 11th place in last year's Seminole Intercollegiate Tournament with a three-round total of 887 (298-292-297). Auburn won the tournament followed by host Florida State.
Illinois State will be represented by junior Zach Burry, freshman David Perkins, sophomore Trent Wallace, senior Christian Crabill and junior Jason Marrs.
"We're excited about heading south and getting back into competition. It's easy to get motivated for this one with the strength of the field," head coach Ray Kralis said. "We are comfortable with this golf course, and as we get more reps under our belt, I believe we'll see more consistency from round to round and start showing some more depth. That was a huge part of our success in the fall, and now would be a great time to start hitting our stride as a team."
