NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State student-athletes matched a departmental grade-point average (GPA) record for the third-straight semester, while three teams tied or beat their previous team GPA records this spring, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academics and Life Skills Dr. Paul Downey announced Thursday.
Illinois State student-athletes combined to post a 3.23 cumulative GPA to equal the department's best mark, also set during the Spring and Fall 2016 semesters.
"I am thrilled that we maintained our departmental GPA record with a 3.23 across all of our student-athletes," Downey said. "These marks are about the culture that has been created here by our academic staff, our coaches, our administration and most importantly, by our student-athletes. They hold themselves to a high standard and are competitors in the classroom and on their respective fields of play. I look forward to celebrating these academic accomplishments at The Reggies academic excellence banquet in October."
The Illinois State baseball and women's golf teams were the team GPA winners for the Spring 2017 semester.
The ISU baseball team set a new team record for the sixth-consecutive semester and topped all men's teams this spring with a 3.47 team GPA, marking the team's first GPA team award since 1998.
The Redbird women's golf team, meanwhile, ranked as the top women's team for the fifth-straight semester, with a 3.85 team GPA.
Illinois State's softball team set a new team record with a 3.57 team GPA, an improvement on last spring's then-record 3.55 mark. The Redbird football team tied its team GPA record of 2.94 for the third time this spring.
A total of 295 Redbird student-athletes (of 409 total) were named to the AFNI Honor Roll, accounting for 72 percent of the group, including every member of the women's golf team. Additionally, a total of 73 student-athletes posted perfect 4.0 GPAs during the spring semester.
