NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State track & field team will host a pole vault and throws fall clinic on Saturday, Nov. 11 and Sunday, Nov. 12. Over the course of the two days, campers ranging from grades 6-12 will receive four sessions of instruction and one session of live competition.
The pole vault clinic will be led by Redbird Associate Head Coach Mary Wood, who enters her fourth year with the ISU track & field program. During her three seasons with the Redbirds, she has coached six Missouri Valley Conference champions, five NCAA West Preliminary Round qualifiers, and four Illinois State record-holders. In 2016, Wood helped pole vault standout Emily Clay claim the Indoor and Outdoor Missouri Valley Conference pole vault titles and ISU's outdoor pole vault record (13-06.25).
The purpose of the pole vault clinic is to offer individual and small group instruction to pole vaulters of varying experience levels. A variety of basic, intermediate, and advanced drills will be taught to help campers improve their vault and increase their knowledge in the event.
The throws clinic will be directed by Illinois State fourth-year Assistant Coach, Shawn Williams. In his three years with the Redbirds, Williams has coached eight NCAA West Preliminary First Round qualifiers, two USATF Junior qualifiers, and a two-time All-American in Jianna Williams. He has guided his athletes to two MVC Championships and assisted in 10 All-MVC performances.
The throws clinic will focus on three events: shot put, discus, and weight throw. Technical sessions will be included for novice to expert level throwers, as well as introductory sessions for weight throw. Basic, intermediate, and advanced drill progressions will be taught in all events.
The cost of the clinic is $150. Lunch for both days is included, and each camper will receive a t-shirt as well. Checks should be made payable to Illinois State University Track & Field Camps and returned to Coach Wood. The deadline to register is Nov. 1, 2017.
