NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men's and women's track & field teams will be back in action Friday when they travel to Terre Haute, Indiana, to battle Indiana State for the 14th Coughlan-Malloy Cup. The meet, hosted by Rose-Hulman, is slated to begin at 5 p.m CT.
The cup, which is named for legendary head coaches Bill Malloy (Indiana State) and John Coughlan (Illinois State), is given to the winner of the combined men's and women's team scores. Since the cup's founding in 2005, Indiana State has brought home the hardware every year except for 2006.
After falling by only 12 points (157-145) to Indiana State last year, the 'Birds are determined to hoist the Coughlan-Malloy Cup this year.
The Redbirds broke multiple school records during their most recent meet at Eastern Illinois on Dec. 8, 2017. Sophomores Jaylan McConico and D'Jenne Egharevba etched their names in the ISU track & field record book, with McConico breaking the 60-meter hurdles record and Egharevba shattering the 60-meter dash record.
McConico was named the MVC Male Track Athlete of the Week on Dec. 12, 2017, for his record-breaking 60-meter hurdles time (7.90) which ranks eighth in the country and first in the Valley. Egharevba's 60-meter dash time of 7.39 currently ranks ninth in the nation and first in the Valley.
Derrius Rodgers also started the season on a high note, posting a 6.66 in prelims of the 60-meter dash. His mark ranks second in all of Division I so far this season.
In the field, pole vaulters Ariana Cranston and Luke Nelson stole the show. Both athletes cracked ISU's Top-10 List and established new personal-bests in the event. Cranston now ranks fourth in Illinois State history with a height of 3.67 meters (12-00.50) and Nelson ranks sixth after clearing 4.88 meters
(16-00.00).
Triple jumpers Victoria Gruszka and Charde Golliday posted strong performances as well, finishing first and second, respectively.
Doors open at the Rose-Hulman Sports and Recreation Center at 3:30 p.m. CT. Friday's meet will also feature a Division III match-up between Rose-Hulman, Manchester, and Washington University.
