CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Illinois State gymnastics team traveled to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on Friday night to face their first Midwest Independent Conference foe of the 2018 season in Southeast Missouri State. The Redbirds received first-place finishes from Gabrielle Cooke and Alyssa Wiggle, however the Redhawks came out on top in the meet with a score of 193.300-191.175 inside Houck Field House.
Cooke put together strong routines throughout the meet and finished in second overall in the all-around with a score of 38.400. The sophomore standout tied for first on the beam with a score of 9.700, and tied for second on the floor exercise with a score of 9.800. She also added a top five finish on vault with a total of 9.700.
Wiggle posted a solid performance on the uneven bars, as she finished in a three-way tie for first place with a score of 9.725. The sophomore also tied for third on beam with a score of 9.675 and was sixth on the floor with a 9.725.
Fellow sophomore Anna Marema also had a strong routine the uneven bars, with a 9.700, and junior Meredith LaRoche tied for third place with a strong performance on the vault, as she finished with a score of 9.700. Freshman Savannah Remkus rounded out the strong effort on beam for the Redbirds, tying for third with a score of 9.675.
The Redbirds will welcome Alaska Anchorage for their first home meet of the season inside Horton Field House on Sunday, January 21, at 2 p.m. The meet will be streamed live for free on GoRedbirds.com via RedbirdHD.tv.Â
