Redbirds to Battle Salukis on Saturday

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Illinois State and Southern Illinois will each look to add to its legacies in the 152-game series between the programs, as the schools meet at 5 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

SETTING THE TABLE


•    In the team's loss to Loyola, the Redbirds allowed just four offensive rebounds and one second-chance point; however, Illinois State was only able to score two second-chance points on seven offensive rebounds.
•    This is Illinois State's second game as part of the "Battle for Illinois" (page 4)
•    Illinois State is one of five schools in NCAA Division I to have their top three scorers rank inside of the top-10 of their conference scoring leaders. In fact, the Redbirds' trio of Milik Yarbrough, Keyshawn Evans, and Phil Fayne all rank inside of the top six in the MVC standings. (page 4)
•    Yarbrough's averages of 17.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game make him one of three student-athletes in the country to average similar numbers, joining St. John's Shamorie Ponds and Florida Gulf Coast's Brandon Goodwin. (page 4)
•    Illinois State is one of three schools in the country to have three players that average at least 16 points per game on the same team, joining Marshall and Oakland. (page 4)
•    In the KenPom.com metric Percentage of Possessions Used, Yarbrough ranks second in the country, behind only Trae Young's total of 39.8. (page 4)
•    The Illinois State trio of Yarbrough, Keyshawn Evans, and Phil Fayne combine to average 51.1 points per game, which stands as the sixth-highest season total in Missouri Valley Conference history, and 10th in program history. (page 5)
•    The Redbirds have the three highest scoring duos in the Missouri Valley Conference this season, as Evans and Fayne, Evans and Yarbrough, and Fayne and Yarbrough each average at least 33.5 points per game as a group, where the next highest pair, Evansville's Ryan Taylor and Dru Smith average 33.2 points per game. •    Yarbrough draws an average of eight fouls per 40 minutes during the season, which ranks as the ninth-highest such total in NCAA Division I. (page 6)
•    Illinois State and Southern Illinois have played four times on January 13, with the Salukis holding a 3-1 lead in those four contests. ISU is 17-12 all-time on the date.

SCOUTING THE SALUKIS


Southern Illinois comes into its home game against Illinois State having lost two straight MVC games at Valparaiso on Jan. 6 and at Bradley on Jan. 9.

In the most recent loss, 68-62 at Bradley, SIU had four players reach double-figure scoring, led by Sean lloyd's 14 points, while Kavion Pippen and Tyler Smithpeters each scored 13. Armon Fletcher added 12 in the losing effort, while recording the team's only blocked shot.

Pippen pulled down nine rebounds, as SIU out-rebounded Bradley 34-to-30 in the contest. Lloyd dished out six assists in addition to his team-high point total, while Aaron Cook nabbed three steals.

For the season it is Fletcher who paces the team, averaging 13.9 points per game, while Lloyd (12.2) and Pippen (11.8) also score in double-figures. Cook is just off of the double-figure plateau by averaging 9.5 points per game.

Pippen and Fletcher each average 5.4 rebounds per game, as Pippen leads the team with 29 blocked shots. Cook has dished out a team-best 53 assists, whle he and Lloyd tie for the team lead with 23 steals on the season.
