ST. LOUIS – Following a record-breaking performance at Saturday's Iowa State Classic, Illinois State redshirt senior Anderson Devonish has been named the MVC Male Track Athlete of the Week, announced the league Tuesday.
Devonish receives this honor after tying Illinois State's 400-meter school record that had not been touched in over forty years. His event-winning time of 46.50 at Saturday's meet ties Bruce Ijirigho's record that was set in 1975.
With the mark, Devonish currently ranks first in the Valley and 23rd in all of Division I in the 400-meter dash. As the 2018 MVC Indoor Championships approach on Feb. 24-25, Devonish also ranks third in the Valley in the 60-meter dash and second in the 200-meter.
Upon receiving this award, Devonish becomes the fourth Redbird this season to earn MVC weekly honors, joining Luke Nelson, Julia Bourke, and Jaylan McConico (who has received this distinction twice).
The Illinois State men's and women's track and field teams will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 17, in their final tune-up before the 2018 MVC Indoor Championships. The majority of the Redbird squad will travel to Champaign, Illinois, to compete in the Orange and Blue Invite. Qualifying athletes will return to South Bend, Indiana, for the Alex Wilson Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame.
