Illinois State downed UAB, 5-2, Friday in Des Moines, Iowa to record its first win on the road this season.
"Huge team win today, we lost the doubles point, so it made the singles a lot more important and the guys stepped up and competed so hard," head coach Mark Klysner said. "But we want to keep this going, so we will rest up tonight and battle again tomorrow against a tough GW squad."
UAB topped Illinois State in the No. 1 and No. 3 spots of doubles for the point. Andreas Boers and Pol Botifoll Rius defeated Nikolai Machev and Henry Piaste, 6-4 in the second flight of doubles earning the sole doubles win.
The Redbirds took five or six singles wins. The Redbirds took the first four singles wins putting the team up 4-1. Igor Kolaric fell in the No. 1 spot in a close three-set match. Egehan Sertkaya took his match over Kenton Parton for the 5-2 margin.
The Redbirds have won 5-straight and look to continue their streak tomorrow against George Washington.
Illinois State will be back on their home court Feb. 23 thorugh Feb. 25 to host DePaul, UIC, and Creighton. Admission to all home matches is free.
