NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State's women's tennis team welcomes Estelle Vanthier to Redbird family, just in time for the 2018 dual season.
Vanthier comes to Illinois State from Geneva, Switzerland
"I chose Illinois State because the school allows me to continue to play the sport I love at a very competitive level and also lets me continue my higher education" Vanthier said.
Prior to Illinois State Vanthier has been consistently ranked in the women's tennis junior top 20 in Switzerland and in the women's tennis top 110 in Switzerland. She also has won the Junior Championship of Geneva six times, qualifying many times for the Swiss Junior Championship main draw.
On the differences between Switzerland and the United States Vanthier says, "The biggest difference is the attitude of the people. People in the U.S. tend to be more open and I really enjoy that aspect. In tennis the biggest difference is working as a team, back home we work more individually and I like getting to be a part of something more."
Vanthier has been with ISU from the beginning of the 2018 dual season. She currently sits at 3-6 in singles where she fluctuates between the three and four spots. Vanthier has been a part of two doubles team in the three spot during her first dual season consisting of Laura Fitzgerald and Valerija Gercar. Fitzgerald and Vanthier own a 3-1 record and Gercar and Vanthier sit 2-3, so far this season.
The freshman attended Ecole Moser for high school in Geneva, Switzerland where she was always ranked one or two in her career at Geneva. She is the daughter of Christine Gillieron and Guillaume Vanthier and she has two siblings, Aude and Alex.
