BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois State men's tennis team blanked Eastern Illinois Friday, March 9 at the Bloomington Tennis Center, improving their record to 9-4.
"I couldn't be more pleased with the effort today," head coach Mark Klysner said. "We had a couple of key starters sit out today and our freshmen stepped up and played some great doubles and just as solid singles."
Pol Botifoll Rius and Cameron Petersen teamed up to earn the first doubles victory. Manuel Bernhard and Brandon Lew followed, clinching the doubles point. Both tandems earned their first wins as partners against the Panthers. Christoffer Greve and Igor Kolaric rounded out doubles play with a win in the No. 1 spot.
Greve swept Logan Charbonneau to bring home the first singles victory. Rius appeared in the No. 3 spot for the first time this season, and topped the Panthers to bring his record to 9-3. Kolaric defeated O'Brien in flight one to clinch the match for the Redbirds. Freshmen Bernhard, Petersen and Lew overcame their opponents for the 7-0 margin.
"Nice way to start spring break," said Klysner. "Now we look forward to Miami as we head down there tomorrow and begin preparations for two very tough matches next weekend."
The Redbirds will head to Fort Myers, Florida March 17 and March 18 for respective matches against Florida Gulf Coast and Grand Canyon.
