ST. LOUIS – After a school record-breaking performance in the 110-meter hurdles at the Sun Angel Classic, hosted by Arizona State, Illinois State sophomore Jaylan McConico has been named the MVC Male Track Athlete of the Week, announced the league Tuesday.
Including the indoor season, this is McConico's third weekly honor of the 2017-18 campaign, as he claimed the award on Dec. 12, 2017, and Jan. 16, 2018. This also marks the third-consecutive week that Illinois State has claimed this weekly honor, with Jack Anstey receiving the award the two previous times.
McConico receives this distinction after shattering ISU's 33-year-old 110-meter hurdles record with a personal-best time of 13.81. Competing against the 110-meter hurdles world record-holder, Aries Merritt, McConico finished third overall at the Sun Angel Classic in his 2018 outdoor debut.
McConico's mark, which currently ranks 14th in the nation, sixth in the NCAA West region, and first in the Valley, surpassed Don Burrell's previous school record of 13.85 that stood since 1985.
A 2018 NCAA Indoor Second-Team All-American in the 60-meter hurdles, McConico now holds both the indoor 60-meter hurdles and outdoor 110-meter hurdles school records in only his second year as a Redbird.
The Illinois State men's and women's track and field teams will be back in action on Saturday, April 14, when they host their lone home meet of the season, the annual Redbird Invite.
