NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's tennis team defeated Missouri Valley Conference foe, UNI, 5-2.
One doubles tandem Veronika Golanova and Jelena Karla Vujicic overcame G. Kemper and R. Lynch, 6-2. Doubles duo Jana Kustkova and Ivon Mihaleva fought hard to defeat H. Proudfoot and V. Caro in the fight for two doubles. The duo managed to come out on top of their UNI opponents, 7-5. Giving Illinois State their third doubles win of the match up was, Valerija Gercar and Laura Fitzgerald, who overcame C. Toledo and S. Hunt, 6-3. The Redbirds lead 1-0 heading into singles.
At one singles Golanova defeated G. Kemper 7-6, 6-4. Following her doubles partner, Vujcic also overcame her opponent R. Lynch, 6-2, 6-1. Kustova fell short to C. Toledo, 6-1, 6-2. Giving ISU their fourth win was Fitzgerald, who overcame H. Proudfoot, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Gercar fell short to V. Caro, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Vanthier was victorious in a three-set battle for six singles.
Illinois State will return to play for their last regular season match up against Missouri Valley Conference rival, Valparaiso on Saturday, April 21. The match starts at 1 p.m. and will take place at the Gregory Street Tennis courts if weather permits. If the weather does not permit, the match will be held at the Bloomington Tennis Center in Bloomington, Illinois.
