NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State swimming and diving team was recognized among the country's best academic programs, as the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) included the Redbirds on its Scholar All-America list for the Spring 2018 semester. Â
The teams recognized represent 476 institutions from across all NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA Divisions. The CSCAA recognizes teams with the Scholar All-America Award for achieving a team grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. Illinois State posted a cumulative team GPA of 3.48 during the spring semester and 11 student-athletes recorded perfect 4.0 GPAs.Â
"We are very proud of this team and their drive to excel in the classroom," Illinois State head coach Scott Cameron said. "They continue to put a priority on their academic success and be outstanding student-athletes in the classroom, in the pool and on the boards."
Success in the classroom and pool went hand-in-hand. On average, twenty-three of the top twenty-five top finishers in each of the NCAA Championships earned the award, with every NCAA title-winning team in all three divisions posting a GPA of 3.17 or higher. Â Nine teams finished among the top ten nationally in both team GPA and at their respective national championships. Â
