TEMPE, Ariz. – On the final day of the Sun Angel Classic, hosted by Arizona State, Illinois State sophomore Jaylan McConico shattered ISU's 33-year-old 110-meter hurdles record, posting a time of 13.81 to finish third overall in his 2018 outdoor debut.
McConico's mark, which currently ranks first in the Valley, surpasses Don Burrell's previous school record of 13.85 that has stood since 1985. A 2018 NCAA Indoor All-American in the 60-meter hurdles, McConico now holds both the indoor 60-meter hurdles and outdoor 110-meter hurdles school records in only his second year as a Redbird.
James Brandenburg posted a solid performance of his own in the 110-meter hurdles, capturing a new personal-best of 14.64. With the mark, Brandenburg ranks eighth all-time in ISU track & field history.
Anderson Devonish and Kimathi Johnson were forces to be reckoned with on the track as well. Competing in his first 400-meter dash of the outdoor campaign, Devonish clocked in at 46.38 to win the event. Johnson excelled in the 800-meter, crossing the finish line in a personal-best 1:52.31 to place sixth.
On the women's side, several Redbirds captured top-five finishes in their respective events. In the long jump, Charde Golliday recorded a leap of 5.80m (19-00.50) to finish fifth overall. Sydney Laufenberg held her own in the premiere section of the women's discus, posting a season-best heave of 51.48m (168-10) to place fourth.
After finishing third in the hammer throw yesterday, Brandy Thomas came back today to place fourth in shot put with a throw of 14.72m (48-03.50).
"We had several performances over the past two days that allow us to leave this meet with a sense of accomplishment," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Jeff Bovee. "However, there is definitely room for improvement, and we need to take full advantage of our home meet next weekend."
