Birds Meet Their Match in National Quarterfinals

The opening day of the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship featured two rounds of doubles competition and brought Illinois States team of Liina Suurvarik and Alesia Mikalayeva both success and defeat. ISUs pair of Suurvarik/Mikalayeva defeated North Carolinas Cline/Mojzis (9-7) during the first round of competition, placing themselves among the top eight doubles teams in the nation. Suurvarik/Mikalayeva then went on to compete in the quarterfinals round of competition but were unable to come up with a win, losing the match to Stanfords Kalvaria/Lastra (8-5). This performance marks the end of the scheduled tournaments for the womens tennis teams 2001 fall season. The team, under Coach Hoovers guidance has shown nothing but improvement and promises of an exciting regular season. The duo of Suurvarik/Mikalayeva ends the fall season with a record of 14-3, a regional championship that made them the first ISU womens tennis players ever to compete for the national title, and an elite place among the top doubles teams in the nation.
