Schermann, Baker, Earn All-District Academic Honors

April Schermann and Melissa Baker , two key players on Illinois State Universitys 2001 Missouri Valley Conference champion softball team, were elected to the Verizon Academic All-District V University Division team. Schermann, a First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection at second base and a Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team member as well, hit .369 for the regular season--No. 3 in the conference--and drove in 32 runs for the Redbirds, who are attempting to defend their Valley Tournament title this weekend in Omaha. A senior math education major from Peoria with a 3.66 cumulative grade point average, Schermann was among the nations leading hitters until an injury slowed her in mid-season. Baker, a sophomore, was selected as the Academic All-District V designated player. The catcher/designated hitter from Reno, Nevada is hitting .219 with two home runs for Illinois State this season. The Verizon Academic All-America program is conducted by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). District V consists of the Division I schools from Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin. They will join players at their positions from seven other districts on the Verizon Academic All-America team ballot, with that election to take place later this month. --30 -- 2001 Verizon Academic All-District V Softball Team (selected by members of College Sports Information Directors of America) Pitchers Leighann Burke, So., Purdue, 3.87 in Management (Lafayette, Ind.)
