Benthall Signs with Illinois State Swimming and Diving

Laine Benthall has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her athletic and academic career at Illinois State University as a member of the Redbird swimming and diving team. The Mt. Vernon, Ind., native was named all-conference all four years in high school and participated at the state meet and was a member of the sectional champion team for four years. Benthall was named an academic all-state selection as a junior and the same year, she was a leg of the 200 medley and 200 freestyle which both finished fifth at the state meet. Illinois State head coach Steve Paska is excited about his new addition to the squad. A freestyle swimmer is probably our weakest area right now due to the graduation of some of our top performers last year, Paska said. Laine can swim the 50 and 100 free, those were her most successful events in high school, and I know her success will also continue at Illinois State. Laine will also provide depth on all freestyle relays, Paska continued. I am looking forward to working with her and her ability excites me. I know our strength and conditioning department will help her get stronger and the development of her body through working with our team will help her to compete at this level. Benthall was an honor roll student at Mt. Vernon Senior High School for four years and qualified for Whos Who Among American High School Students. She intends to major in Fashion Design and was also recruited by North Texas and Georgia Southern.
