Normal, Ill. -
The Illinois State University Student-Athlete Advisory Council has partnered with the Office of Admissions to sponsor an informational meeting, "So You Want to Be a College Student-Athlete?" intended for students, parents, principals, guidance directors and counselors, athletics directors and coaches with an interest in the process and changes in the NCAA initial-eligibility requirements for high school student-athletes who intend to compete in Division I and Division II college athletics.
It has become evident to Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance, Cindy Harris that many people involved in the process of NCAA initial-eligibility requirements are uninformed of the changes that have been made in the past few years.
"In traveling around the state and doing this type of presentation it has become clear to me that so many of the coaches, parents and counselors involved with this process are uniformed and in some cases confused about the changes the NCAA has made to the initial eligibility requirements," said Harris.
The informational meeting will be held in the Bone Student Center on the campus of Illinois State on Sunday, November 13. The two hour presentation will begin at 6 p.m. with free parking validation in the Bone Student Center Visitor Lot (located directory north of the BSC) which will be provided upon check-in.
Harris believes it is critical that high school students who think they might have what it takes athletically to make it to the next level be informed about these NCAA requirements early in their high school years.
Topics that will be covered in the presentation include NCAA core courses, core grade point average, test scores (ACT and SAT), registering for the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse, process and timing of applying for admissions to college, official visits, strategies and perspectives on improving test scores and what it is really like to be a college student-athlete.
Not only will a powerpoint presentation be provided about initial-eligibility requirements, but a Q&A session with current Redbird student-athletes will highlight the program.
Harris is extremely excited about the event and the benefits that those in attendance will gain from the presentation.
"I'm very excited about this event because I am passionate about getting this much-needed information out to as many college-bound student-athletes and their parents as I can," said Harris. "I'm sure those that attend the event will find it both informative and entertaining."
