NORMAL, Ill. -
Meeting two of the teams for the first time all season, the Illinois State gymnastics team travels to Denton, Texas for Friday's Midwest Independent Conference championships.
Hosted by Texas Women's University, the five-team meet will begin at 6 p.m. (CST).
The Redbirds have failed to capitalize on any conference competitions to date, as the squad carries a 0-7 MIC record. However, these losses have been to only two conference schools, Southeast Missouri State and Illinois-Chicago, as the `Birds have not yet faced two conference foes: Texas Women's and Centenary.
After posting their season-high score on Saturday, March 19 at the State of Illinois Classic, the team is hoping to carry that fire into this year's conference meet. Another positive for the `Birds is that the team finished fourth at last year's championship hosted by Illinois State. The 2004 squad defeated Texas Women's.
Head coach Kristin Montero is hopeful for her team, wanting to end the season on a high-note.
"We have seen a lot of obstacles throughout this season," said Montero. "I think the girls have made this team stronger. In the last few weeks things have been getting better with each competition. I think we are going to continue that trend this weekend. I know that myself and everyone on the team want to end the season on a good note. It is important to take away what we have learned this year and use those lessons to achieve our goals for the future."
