Illinois State junior Matt Miller carded a five-under-par 67 Tuesday en route to a tie for fourth place (69,74,67) at the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence, Kan. The `Birds also improved their team score, shooting a four-under-par 284 to finish the tournament in seventh-place (291,295,284).
Senior Kris Wildenradt also continued his consistent play, firing an even-par 72 to finish the day at two-under-par and tied for 11th place (71,71,72) individually. ISU's 284 team score Tuesday was the second-lowest mark on the day and only one golfer went lower than Miller's career-best 67.
Assistant coach Pina Gentile was pleased with Miller's play in the third-round of the 17-team tournament.
"Matt Miller had an incredible round today," said Gentile. "He came in today and shot a great round. He got the job done."
Senior Chris Eddy shot an even-par 72 to finish the tournament with a three-round total of 221 (73,76,72) and tied for 43rd. Senior Matt Maskel improved to a one-over-par 73, finishing with a three-round total of 229 (78,78,73) and in a tie for 74th. Senior Jason Kemp also finished the day tied for 74th, shooting a three-round total of 229 (79,74,76).
Host Kansas won the tournament, shooting a team total of 852 (286,277,289). Gary Woodland led the Jayhawks by shooting a two-over-par 74 to finish the day in third-place with a three-round total of 209 (69,66,74). Robby Shaw of Western Kentucky won medalist honors, shooting a three-under-par 69 to finish with a three-round total of 206 (69,68,69).
Gentile is looking at the third-round as a sign of things to come from the `Birds.
"After today, I am looking forward to the future events," said Gentile. "We had a good day, but we know that there is still so much more that we can do this season."
The Redbirds will travel to Louisville, Ky., next week to play in the Louisville Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday September, 26th and 27th.
