Panthers Down Redbirds in First Minutes of Overtime

Sept. 25, 2005

MILWAUKEE - After a weather delay of over an hour, the Illinois State women's soccer team returned to the field to play an overtime period with the hopes of securing a Redbird win. The Panthers of Wisconsin-Milwaukee had other ideas, however, scoring in the first two minutes of the overtime period and sending the `Birds home from Englemann Field with a 1-0 loss. The Redbirds are now 3-4-2 on the year.

Just before the end of regulation, at approximately 1:22 p.m., the game was delayed for 61 minutes due to lightning. Play resumed, however, and with the game still scoreless at the end of the 90-minute regulation, a ten-minute overtime period was added to the clock.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee didn't need that whole ten minutes, as the Panthers scored just 1:17 into overtime. UW-Milwaukee senior midfielder Katie Campion scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Stacey Faude and Elicia Scaife. Campion had three shots on the day.

Illinois State recorded eight shots, only two in the first half and three of which were on goal. Junior Meghan Boler tallied three of those eight shots, with one on goal.

UW-Milwaukee fired 12 shots at Illinois State goalkeeper Andrea Shaw. Four of those shots were on goal and three were saved by Shaw. She logged all keeper minutes for the `Birds, after only playing in the first half of Friday's loss to Loyola.

Illinois State head coach Pete Kowall was disappointed with Sunday's outcome.

"We let another one get away," said Kowall. "We had several chances where we could have scored and should have scored. We would get the ball up the field, string some passes together and then not finish. I am proud of my team that we played better in the second half after coming out slow, but there is no trophy for losing or improving your play in the second half. We're playing well but we're just not finishing the chances we get.

"We just have to hold our heads high and get through this rough spot," Kowall continued. "This team isn't used to losing or having this sort of record. League play starts next week, so it will be like a whole new season. We need to be focused on those games and what we need to do to win them. I'm still confident in my team and the way they can play."

Illinois State returns to Normal, Ill. for a three-game homestand. The Redbirds will host Valley foe, Drake, on Friday, September 30, for a 2:30 p.m. showdown. IPFW will then visit Adelaide Street Field on Sunday, September 2, at noon, as the `Birds celebrate Senior Day, Alumni Day and the Heidecke Tribute.
