Junior Matt Miller fired a first-round three-under-par 68 as he finished day one in second place with a two round total of 138 (68, 70) and seven shots off the lead at the 10th annual Roadrunner Intercollegiate Monday at the Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas. Senior Matt Maskel also shot a second-round two-under-par 69, tied for 16th with a two-round total of 146 (76, 69).
The Redbirds finished day one in fifth-place with a two-round total of 588 (297, 291), and fifteen shots off the lead.
Assistant coach Pina Gentile was pleased with the effort from Miller.
"Matt did an exceptional job today," said Gentile. "He was able to handle his emotions and battle back when things got tough."
Seniors Kris Wildenradt and Chris Eddy both finished the day tied for 47th after shooting identical rounds of 76 to finish with a two-round total of 152 (76, 76). Freshman Ben Murphy rounded out the lineup for the `Birds, shooting a two-round total of 163 (84, 79) and in 83rd place. Playing as an individual, senior Jason Kemp finished the day in 89th with a two-round total of 173 (86, 87).
Baylor finished day one in the lead, three shots ahead of Lamar after shooting a team total of 573 (290, 283). The Bears were paced by Ryan Baca, who sits in first-place after firing a first-round seven-under-par 64 to finish with a two-round total of 131 (64, 67).
Gentile feels that the `Birds can move up in the rankings with a strong performance in tomorrow's final-round.
"I'm optimistic going into tomorrow," said Gentile. "Everyone had times today where things were going good, and we can definitely move into the top three if we play to our potential."
The Redbirds resume play on Tuesday beginning at 8:00 a.m., for the final 18 holes of the tournament.
