SAN ANTONIO -
Senior Matt Miller fired a final-round four-under-par 67, finishing four shots ahead of his nearest competitor to capture medalist honors at the 12th Annual UTSA Intercollegiate Tuesday in San Antonio, Texas. Miller notched his second career victory, ending the tournament with a three-round total of five-under-par 208 (72, 69, 67).
Miller's performance helped the Redbirds move up two spots in the standings, tying for sixth place with Nebraska with a team total of 899 (306, 297, 296) at the par-71, 6,765-yard, Oak Hills Country Club.
Associate head coach Pina Gentile was impressed with the way Miller was able to finish his final-round.
"Matt's performance today was outstanding," said Gentile. "I think his performance at this tournament says a lot about Matt as a player, because he did a great job of managing his game and never letting the pressure get to him."
Following his brother's lead, freshman Drew Miller also improved his place on the leader board by finishing tied for 16th with a three-round total of 223 (77, 72, 74). Sophomore Ben Murphy finished with a three-round total of 236 (79, 80, 77) and tied for 68th place. Freshman Tommy Bliefnick placed 73rd, firing a total of 241, while sophomore Joe Emerich shot a total of 244 and finished in 83rd.
Competing as an individual, senior Ryan Brown finished in 87th place with a three-round total of 249.
Sam Houston State won the tournament, shooting a three-round team total of 865 (295, 295, 275). Louisiana-Monroe (883) finished in second, while host Texas-San Antonio placed third with a team total of 891. New Orleans fell to fourth place, and DePaul rounded out the top five with a total of 895.
"We are definitely making strides in the right direction," Gentile said. "Our main goal at this point in the season is to do the things that will make us better come conference tournament time. We have been doing a great job of managing our minds and improving our short game, and that always separates the good players from the great players."
The Redbirds will have some time off to practice before they travel to Limestone, Ala., to compete at the Samford Intercollegiate on March 11-12.
