Harris Wins Second Provincial Women's Amateur Golf Title

July 17, 2007

New Minas, Nova Scotia - Illinois State women's golfer Laura Harris has won her second provincial women's amateur golf title in four years. Harris was playing on her home course at Ken-Wo in New Minas, Nova Scotia when she took the title.

Harris led the competition through all four rounds, but the final round ended closer than expected. Going into the final round, Harris led Irene Jung by six strokes and Mireille LeBlanc by eight, but Harris shot seven-over-par on the last eight holes and saw her lead decrease to two strokes. Shooting her second straight 78 in the competition, Harris needed nearly all of her six-shot cushion to win the championship.

"The first three days was very relaxed golf, but the last nine holes made things a lot more interesting, and I felt a lot more pressure on the last five holes," Harris told Chris Kallan of The Daily News.

Harris is currently chasing after another provincial junior title this week at Osprey Ridge, but she will miss the Canadian women's amateur. Instead, she will play at an international junior match play competition in Scotland. The competition will be composed of teams from Canada, the United States and Scotland. It will be a three day event at the notable St. Andrew's course.
