ST. LOUIS -
Illinois State's Lloyd Phillips, a transfer from Iowa Western Community College, earned the first Missouri Valley Conference accolade of his career Monday when he was named the newcomer of the week by the league office.
Phillips scored a team-high 16 points off the bench in Illinois State's 72-69 come-from-behind overtime victory at Missouri State Sunday. He was 6-for-9 from the field and 4-of-5 on three-point tries against the Bears.
The Washington, D.C., native scored 10 of his points in the second half, which were all a part of ISU's 22-2 run that erased a 15-point deficit. He also added four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Phillips and the Redbirds will continue Valley play Wednesday when Illinois State hosts Evansville in a New Year's Eve tilt on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. The game will tipoff at 2:05 p.m.
