Freshman Hannah Deutsch won two events Friday night, leading the Illinois State gymnastics team (5-1) past Alaska-Anchorage (3-6),189.450-186.425. The competition was the first of two meetings between the Redbirds and the Seawolves this weekend.
The Redbirds' score of 189.450 was their lowest team total on the season, but Illinois State won every event in the competition.
Head coach Bob Conkling feels that his team performed well, even if the team had its lowest score of the season.
"The gymnasts battled their way through the meet," said Conkling. "They followed through on all of their routines. Their routines on the vault, floor and (balance) beam were excellent. We had a few falls on the (balance) beam and stepped out (of bounds) on the floor routine, but overall I am proud of the girls and the way they performed their routines."
Junior co-captain Meaghan Koshman won the all-around event with a score of 37.800. It was Koshman's second consecutive all-around win. Freshman Erica Schick took second in the event with a score of 37.525.
On the vault, the Redbirds scored a 48.125. Deutsch placed first in the event with a score of 9.725, a career-best. Koshman tied for second-place with Alaska-Anchorage's Leah Wilson. Each gymnast scored of 9.675.
Freshman Emily Matko scored a career-best on the floor routine with a score of 9.675. The score put Matko in second place. Third place went to Deutsch with a 9.650. Kelsey Fullerton of Alaska-Anchorage won the event with a 9.750.
The `Birds struggled on the uneven bars and earned their lowest score of the night with a 46.575. The gymnasts competing on the uneven bars scored their lowest individual marks of the season. Schick finished second in the event with a score of 9.525, while Freshman Robin Weissman came in third place with a tally of 9.500.
Deutsch won her second event of the night on the balance beam with a score of 9.750. Koshman scored a 9.600 to place third in the event.
The Redbirds will compete against Alaska-Anchorage again on Sunday, Feb. 17. The competition is set to begin at 5 p.m. and will be held at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in Anchorage, Alaska.
